Bödvar, the flagship legend of Brawlhalla, is a very balanced viking legend featuring the Hammer and Sword as his weapons. He can be unlocked for 2300 gold. Bödvar is a mighty human Legend from the ruthless viking era, wearing typical viking fur clothing in a stand-out green colour. Being half bear, he as a strong affinity with his ursine heritage, which gives him great strength and ferocity - this animal power he demonstrates constantly in the field of battle in Valhalla's the eternal tournament.

Convinced he would never fall in battle, Bödvar the Bearson kicked down the doors of Valhalla and let himself in. - Mallhalla

Lore

The Unconquered Viking, The Great Bear

I speak, you noble vikings, of a warrior who surpassed you all. I tell of a great bear-man who overcame giants and armies, and of how he came to leave our world and challenge the Gods. - The Saga of Bödvar Bearson, first stanza

Born of a viking mother and bear father, Bödvar grew up feared and mistrusted by his own people.

Bödvar's first nemesis was the terrible giant bear Grothnar, his own brother. By defeating Grothnar in a battle that lasted seven days, Bödvar chose to side with humanity and became the protector of the people of the north. He led his Skandian People against the Witch Queen of Helheim, slew the White Dragon Sorcerer, and lived the life of an all-conquering hero.

After he single-handedly ended the Giant Wars by trapping the fire giant king in his own volcano, Bödvar sensed his work was done. But he felt doomed to never be taken by the Valkyries to Valhalla because he could never manage to be defeated in battle. So he travelled to Asgard himself, broke down the doors and let himself in.

Valhalla is everything Bödvar hoped - an endless reward of feasting and fighting, with himself among its greatest champions.

Listen you nine-mothered bridge troll, I'm coming in, and the first beer I'm drinking is the one in your fist. -Bödvar to Heimdall, the guardian of the gates of Asgard

Appearance

Bödvar the Viking wears typical viking fur clothing in a stand-out green colour. His fur shirt comes together at the waist, parted to show the rippling muscles of his chest, and joins with pants, which are coloured a darker green that is also seen at his shirt edges. Having no sleeves, a fur glove is on each hand, giving him a firm grip on his weapons as he shows his strength in battle. Also notable is his impressive viking beard, which is carefully groomed, moustache, which is held to each side by two bands, and hair, which is shortly cut; all of his hair is a pale blonde shade with its own unusual tint of green, accentuated by his clothing. He also has a striking headpiece, which is itself a turquoise metal band and golden insignia, that adorns Bödvar with jet black horns. His weapons, the Sword and Hammer are bound by blue leather, and are gilt in gold. The Broad Sword has a shining steel blade, and a golden piece down the length of the blade. The Warhammer, however, has a stone head that tapers to a point at one end, which is firmly attached by a decorative golden clasp, and has a golden ring circumferencing the hammer head's widest point.

Signature Attacks

Sword

Input Description Damage Stun Frame Advantage Force Animation Frame Data (min) Notes
Stun (total) Stun (after hit) Variable Fixed Startup Frames Active Frames Recovery Frames
Neutral Dragon's Doom! Bödvar jumps straight upwards into the air, taking hold of anyone in front of him. At the peak of his jump he swings his sword horizontally, hitting anything in front of him, including grabbed targets, before dropping back down. 21.62 to 28.35 26 to 47 21 -5 0 or 60 1 or 50 20 17(4)5 25 Bödvar hangs in the air for a surprisingly long time while performing this move, making it possible to grab unaware opponents who ran out of jumps or other means of escape.

or

Bödvar lunges forward, swinging his sword horizontally in a single powerful strike in front. 30 to 36.09 24 15 -9 58 60 22 9 23 Bödvar’s bread-and-butter move. The swing comes out relatively quickly and hits in a vertically broad area. However, it does not hit enemies standing too close to Bödvar’s original position before the attack.
Bödvar hops very slightly into the air and brings the sword down and back in an arcing sweep that hits all targets near him, starting from front to back. 26.47 to 32.22 22 13 -16 56 60 18 9 28 Bödvar’s quickest Sword signature, this move is good for punishing damaged enemies who are trying to climb back into the stage or run too close to him. It does not hit anyone behind Bödvar.

Hammer

Input Description Damage Stun Frame Advantage Force Animation Frame Data (min) Notes
Stun (total) Stun (after hit) Variable Fixed Startup Frames Active Frames Recovery Frames
Neutral Blood of the Bear! Bödvar brings the hammer upwards in a powerful uppercut, empowered by a large bear spirit behind him, hitting anything in front and diagonally above him. 25.95 to 30.93 19 5 -21 66 65 25 14 25 The move’s hitbox covers both the bear’s swatting paw and the jaws, making attempts to attack Bödvar from above very dangerous.

or

Bödvar pulls his hammer back and brings it down in a tremendous arcing overhead smash, hitting approximately everything in the hammer's smashing arc, but dealing the most to what ends up directly underneath the hammerhead. 30.09 to 36.09 19 13 17 54 65 19 6 29 Because the move damages everything caught by the hammer’s arc, it can be employed as a quick anti-air attack if you gravity cancel it.
Bödvar does a reaching, lunging grab with the hammer's hook end that extends far out in front. Grabbed targets are pulled in and hurled with tremendous force in the opposite direction. 25.03 to 29.64 53 or 54 42 -2 0 or 63 1 or 70 26 12 30 This signature's hitbox is deceptively large as well as broad, giving it the element of surprise against the unfamiliar or the unready.

Combos

All combos are subject to change as the game gets tweaked from patch to patch.
Weapon Inputs What it's useful for? Damage Is it a true combo? Other notes Example video(s)
Sword DLight, Gravity Cancel, NHeavy 31.8 No
Sword DLight, Gravity Cancel, SHeavy 38 No
Sword DLight, Gravity Cancel, DHeavy 34.4 No
Sword SLight, SHeavy 50 No
Hammer DLight, NHeavy 34 Yes Failing on this combo isn't as bad because of the lingering hitbox that punishes spot dodges.
Hammer DLight, SHeavy 41.3 Yes It is much easier to achieve a true combo with this combo as opposed to the previous one.
Hammer DLight, Jump, Gravity Cancel, DHeavy 33.1 No

Strategy

General

  • Generally considered the "Mario" of the roster, Bödvar's moveset is both balanced and powerful - his neutral signatures in particular are powerful tools for covering approaches or following up a series of light attacks, despite their apparent short range or awkward placement.

Trivia

  • Bödvar's default weapons are the Warhammer (hammer) and the Broad Sword (sword).
  • Bödvar's bot name is Bötvar.
  • Bödvar was one of the first four Legends to be developed for the game, the others being Cassidy, Lord Vraxx and Orion.
  • As Bödvar went undefeated in his entire life and made his own entry into Valhalla, he is one of the few Legends in the afterlife of Asgard who can be said to have never actually died.
  • Bödvar is listed as one of Nix's cold-cases - a rogue soul past it's expiration who was never collected by a psychopomp for the afterlife.

Open Beta
Build Changes
2.62.0 • Clean up on selected character animation
2.60.0 • Removed generic charge effects from Bodvar's Neutral Sword Signature.
2.52.0 Increased travel speed to push effective threat farther forward and make Signature harder to outrun.
 • Bodvar Side Hammer increased travel speed before the first hit.
2.33.0 Bodvar has received some decreased damage to his Side Hammer, due to the ability to combo into it from a Hammer Down Light.
 • Bodvar Side Hammer: Decreased Damage from 31 to 28.
2.12.0 Bödvar's Down Sword is being toned down slightly due to its size and Force.
 • Bodvar Down Sword: Increased Time to Hit from 17 to 18.
2.10.0 • Bodvar Neutral Hammer: On first frame of hit window, movement speed is capped at 16.
• Bodvar Side Hammer: Increased movement speed on first frame of charge from 24 to a range between 24 and 60 when dodge canceled.
2.8.0 • Bödvar Neutral Hammer: Updated hurtboxes to better match animation.
2.4.0 Bodvar's Down Sword was originally given an usually high Force value because so much force is lost in bouncing the target against the ground. With the addition of Gravity Cancels, it's too potent an edge guarding tool.
 • Bodvar Down Sword: Reduced Variable Force from 65 to 56; Increased Fixed Force from 50 to 60; Removed a small, 3 frame lingering hitbox at the end of the swing.
2.1.0 Bodvar's something of a concern. His winrates aren't that far off, but he's the most widely used character in high level ranked play. His Down Sword has always been a strong move, but can be especially devastating when combined with gravity cancels. We've slowed it some.
 • Bodvar Down Sword: Slightly increased Time to Hit.
Closed Beta
Build Changes
1.19.5 • Fixed a bug where Big Rig Bodvar's teeth would be black with the black color swap.
1.17.0 Powers that "grab" had logic to prevent them from being interrupted when hit. These cases happen a lot more in 2v2 and can feel broken and unsatisfying. We'll be keeping an eye on these individual moves to see if it becomes too easy to save teammates caught by them.
 • Bodvar Neutral Sword: Removed period where user cannot be interrupted during grab.
We feel like Bodvar has been in a decent spot, winrate-wise. However, most of the Bodvar play we've seen is overreliant on his Neutral Sigs. We're taking some power from those and moving it to less used signatures instead in hopes of rounding out his kit.
 • Bodvar Neutral Hammer: Increased Recover Time; Decreased Damage and Force.
 • Bodvar Neutral Sword: Increased Recover Time.
 • Bodvar Side Hammer: Slightly decreased Time to Hit; Decreased Recover Time.
 • Bodvar Down Sword: Slightly decreased Time to Hit and Recover; Slightly sped up attack duration.
1.16.0 • Bödvar found his umlauts and added them back to his Lore page.
1.11.0 • Bodvar and Orion now have unique powers for all Heavy Ground attacks with both weapons.
1.8.7 • Improved alternate color schemes for Asgard Bodvar skin.
• Fixed an animation frame where Bodvar's neck would stick out over his face during his Hammer Special
1.6.1 • Updated Bodvar Dragon's Doom sfx; Flourish has been redone and is much less poppy.
1.5.1 • Dragon's Doom: Reduced hitbox size, slightly increased time to hit.
• Reworked Bodvar Dragon's Doom sfx, added a hit react sfx.
1.1.0 • Dragon's Doom: Increased minimum charge time, decreased Force.
1.0.0 • New beefed up fx for Bödvar Dragon's Doom
Alpha
