Gnash is a powerful, low dexterity legend featuring the Hammer and Spear as his weapons. He can be unlocked for 5400 gold. Gnash, one of Valhalla's earliest inhabitants (according to some, the very first), is a great warrior from Earth's the stone-age period, wearing the skin of a sabre-toothed tiger, an icon both of his historic background and era-defining strength. Gnash's animalism permeates through his single-minded ruthlessness in the eternal tournament's fighting as much as through his appearance, even if he seems to know or care little of his own role as a contestant.

Older than history, tougher than rock. What you call monsters he calls breakfast.Mallhalla purchase description

Lore

The First Real Man

"Archeological and DNA evidence both point to the existence of a single Super Hunter - one extraordinary individual whose dramatic life corresponds exactly with the time and place in human history that Homo-Sapiens avoided extinction and catapulted forward." - American Journal of Prehistoric Studies

In the darkness before the dawn of history, Gnash was raised by the harsh jungle itself. The lone hunter was called "Long Fang" by the saber-thooths, "the Beast" by the human clans, and "Swift Death" by the Primordials, an ancient race of savage cannibal apes.

The ruthless Primordials drove humankind to the brink of extinction before Gnash emerged to stalk their steps. He devised the very first 'plan' when he drove the last of the Primordials through the Great Crevasse to the Valley of the Never Setting Sun and trapped them there with a giant avalanche.

No one has been in Valhalla longer, and some say he was hunting these heavenly forests before Odin and company arrived. He continues to collect firewood, avoid darkness, store food for winter, and does not seem to understand or care that he is not still on Earth. He talks little about the Tournament, or anything else, but his winning record speaks for itself.

"[points to sky][walks fingers on palm][shows two fingers][shakes fist][points to self] Do I make myself clear?" - Gnash

Appearance

Gnash, one of Valhalla's earliest inhabitants (according to some, the very first), is a great warrior from Earth's the stone-age period, and his appearance reflects this. He wears all across his body the skin of a sabre-toothed tiger, an icon both of his historic background and era-defining strength and power. Its domineering head, which has a dead-eyed golden stare to rival Gnash's own animalistic gaze, covers his own, with one long tooth framing each side of his unshaved face. It gives him a striking, bright orange colour at his head and feet, where the tiger fur is most visible, with cream fur edging at his head, shoulders, hands and feet. His chest and wrists are covered by a green material, presumably cloth, which keeps his animal-skin attire together. Tribal tatoos on his face encircle his blank white eyes, and ragged, mis-matched teeth stick out from his lower jaw.

Signature Attacks

Spear

Input Description Animation Damage Stun Frame Data Notes
Neutral Gnash performs a leaping back flip, lashing out with the spear in an arc above and slightly in front of him as he does so. GnashSPN.gif 18.9-26 points of damage This move takes Gnash off the ground and allows him to evade certain low attacks. It comes out quickly, and the sweep of the arc is deep, allowing him to outrange many aerial approaches.

or

Gnash leaps forward in a tremendous lunge, stabbing forward with his spear at the midpoint of the lunge. GnashSPF.gif 28.1-40.7 points of damage This move takes Gnash off the ground and allows him to evade certain low attacks, jump over mines and cross short gaps. The hitting part of the attack doesn’t start until the midpoint of his leaping lunge, so it isn't effective against opponents standing too close.
Gnash rolls backwards into a crouch to charge this attack and then pounces forward, bringing the spear slamming down on his enemies on the spot where he was just standing. GnashSPD.gif 28.9-39.3 points of damage Gnash moves backwards and then jumps off the ground, so this signature is good for avoiding attacks. It also can catch people off guard due to the fact that Gnash moves back before attacking. More reliable than many other “riposte” style attacks, as the spear has a broader sweep.

Hammer

Input Description Animation Damage Stun Frame Data Notes
Neutral Gnash leaps up and slightly forward, bringing his hammer in a circular sweeping arc in front and below him. GnashHMN.gif 23.4-32 points of damage Good for edge- and air-guarding. Like with many of Gnash’s attacks, the hammer’s sweep is easy to underestimate, allowing you to catch many approaches with it.

or

Gnash pulls his hammer back and then brings it horizontally forward, hitting anything in front of him in a narrow arc. GnashHMF.gif 22.2-32 points of damage A bread-and-butter move for Gnash, this attack comes out fast and hits hard, outpacing many hammer side signatures like those of Bodvar, Scarlet and Teros. It’s also one of the shorter-ranged hammer side signatures, so you need a highly aggressive approach to use effectively. This move lunges Gnash forward a bit, making it impossible to hit anyone overlapping with him.
Gnash crouches down to charge this move, then executes a flying, lunging leap, ending it by smashing his hammer into the ground with a tremendous impact that sends rocks and boulders up where it lands. GnashHMD.gif 27.8-37.4 points of damage One of Gnash’s most powerful moves, this move has a tremendous travel distance, and equally tremendous damage and force behind it. It also travels a short distance below ground level if there is no ground where Gnash’s jump ends, allowing it to be used to bring pain to distant airborne opponents who are trying to recover. Naturally, the move's leap will carry Gnash over pits, mines, projectiles and other opponents, though no damage will be done until the hammer starts coming down near the point of impact. Space this move accordingly.

Strategy

General

  • A vicious and aggressive legend, Gnash's moveset allows for great power contained within sudden bursts of speed, allowing for vicious string potential and surprising knockout moves. Both of his weapons have sigs that allows for far-reaching, lunging strikes, granting him a longer reach than many legends, and certainly longer than any other legend wielding a hammer.

 • Gnash Side Hammer: Increased Damage from 20 to 22.

2.20.0 Gnash has received some updated hitboxing on his Down Spear power, resulting in slightly increased forward reach and slightly less reach behind him.
 • Gnash Neutral Spear: Fixed a timing issue with the animation that caused it not to match hitbox timing.
 • Gnash Down Spear: Adjusted hitboxes to better match the animation.
2.17.0 • Gnash Down Hammer: Adjusted animation timing to better match Hitboxing and Recover Time.
2.14.0 Gnash's Down Hammer had almost no Recovery whatsoever when performed off of a ledge. We've increased this slightly.
 • Gnash Down Hammer: When ending in the air, decreased Recover Time on hit from 14 to 2.
2.13.1 Our recent change removing the instant Recover Time on Gnash's Down Hammer removed some situational uses for the move beyond what was needed for balance. We've added back the former time in the event of a hit.
 • Gnash Down Hammer: If no ground collision - Increased Recover Time from 2 to 14.
2.10.0 • Gnash Down Spear: Increased movement speed during charge from -40 to 65 when dodge canceled.

 • Gnash Side Spear: Reduced Variable Force from 57 to 54; Reduced Fixed Force from 77 to 72.
2.1.0 We're pushing some of the strength around on Gnash's signatures to fix places where there are a little too much or too little opportunity to punish him.
 • Gnash Hammer Side: Increased Recover Time.
 • Gnash Down Spear: Slightly decreased Recover Time.
Closed Beta
Build Changes
1.20.1 Gnash has one of the higher winrates this patch, especially in lower ranks. We're moving some power from his extremely punishing Down Hammer to his lesser-used Neutral.
 • Gnash Down Hammer: Reduced Force; Reduced Maximum Damage.
 • Gnash Neutral Hammer: Extended Hit Window and Re-hitboxed to follow the swing beneath Gnash.
 • Brought the tail end of effects on Gnash Neutral Hammer up a little so that it doesn't look like it should hit so far below him.
1.17.0 Powerhouse Gnash needs a few changes to put him more in line with the other Legends. His Neutral Hammer signature in particular dominates his play. We've also pushed his Down Hammer signature a little further out, giving it a longer threat but more opportunity to be interrupted.
 • Gnash Neutral Hammer: Removed Hitbox from last few frames so it won't sweep back behind him as far; Slightly Increased Time to Hit, Recover Time, and Cooldown.
 • Gnash Down Hammer: Increased leap duration before first hit.
1.14.0 • Gnash Side Spear: Decreased Time to Hit.
1.12.0 • Gnash Spear Side: No longer cancels into hit if reaches the target early. Increased Recover Time; Increased Damage; Slightly Increased Force
